Objective: During my time at The Spectator, I was challenged to reimagine how the magazine’s iconic illustrated covers could live beyond print. The goal was to create short, captivating animations that captured the wit and tone of each issue — sparking curiosity and encouraging readers to pick up or click through the latest edition.
Solution: Each cover presented a completely new world, demanding quick creative decisions to shape a distinctive motion narrative. By carefully cutting and layering the original illustrations, I created depth and subtle movement—such as drifting smoke, shifting expressions, or atmospheric motion—that enhanced the narrative of each cover. Sound design and music selection played a key role in heightening mood and pacing, allowing each animation to feel like a living extension of the artwork rather than a literal translation.
The result was a series of short stories animations shared across The Spectator’s digital channels — breathing new energy into the brand’s timeless identity and inviting audiences to experience its covers in an entirely new way.
